I bought this DVD for my Husband We live in the area this movie was portrayed in I love Sam Elliot Jerry O'connell did a good acting job I'm glad we only spent a few dollars on this movie Verified purchase: Yes Condition: pre-owned Sold by: bluemovieguy. I recommend this movie for yourself and also showing your teen agers what life was like at their age, but before the electronic age happened.

But watch it anyways. In researching the film a little more, I saw that the film was adapted from a semi-autobiographical collection of stories by Norman Maclean titled A River Runs Through It. And more importantly, read this book? Just grabbed the book on ebay this morning. That collection of stories is some of my favorite summertime hammock reading — beautiful but not precious, a time capsule of the west as it was for just a moment in the early 20th century.
Despite its elaborate title, "The Ranger, the Cook and a Hole in the Sky" is just a simple old coming-of-age yarn. This production on ABC is not in that class, but it meanders along amiably and has enough beautifully photographed scenery to do a nature film proud. It's the summer of The year-old Mac, played by Jerry O'Connell "Sliders" , is doing another stint as forest-ranger assistant to the leathery, taciturn Bill Bell. Bell, reputed to be the best ranger in the West, is portrayed by the cowboy everyman Sam Elliott "The Sacketts" , who appears here cleanshaven instead of with his usual scruffy and imposing mustache.
