If I had to sum up Ori and the Blind Forest in one word, that would be it. The new Xbox One and PC platformer looks like a magnificently drawn kids' fantasy book sprung to life. It has the lush, magical aesthetic and inoffensive charm that gamers have come to accept—and expect—from indie games. Thankfully, unlike other similarly charming indie titles that have stuck pretty artwork on top of an established genre template, Ori and the Blind Forest doesn't take "pleasant" to mean "toothless. Ori can be a resolutely solid, tough-as-nails platformer when it wants to be.

Ori And The Blind Forest is a 2D platformer featuring the adventures of a spirit called Ori, and set in a forest where the once lush canopy and undergrowth have fallen under a mysterious blight. With no guidance or support, Ori must travel alone in search of answers - and a possible solution to the malady. You will also be endowed with a few select powers that you can use to take on the many capricious beasties lurking in the foliage, splobbering over the land and hanging from the branches. The forest itself presents many dangers: viciously thorny clusters encroach on the trees and bushes at every turn, stone slabs inexplicably cascade from the depths, and some plants like to disappear just when you want to put your feet on them. In fact, there are quite a few game mechanics in Ori that allow for some really intriguing puzzles. Almost none of these are necessarily new to the genre, but they are deployed with such skill that it is a joy to play from start to finish. Essentially, the game takes place on one massive map.

Ori and the Blind Forest is so lovingly drawn, so full of light and colour, so deeply layered with scenic detail, that you suspect the developers will want to take you by the hand to ensure you see it all. To the credit of Moon Studios, the opposite is true. This game may be beautiful, but it is also deadly. Mixing interactive sequences and memory vignettes, the Ghibli-inspired opening sequence introduces us to the eponymous forest spirit Ori and her bear-like caregiver before tearing them apart. From the start precision and attention to detail are demanded.
