Also in , Lake joined forces with childhood friend, eventual guitar godhead Robert Fripp — the pair had shared a guitar teacher growing up — in King Crimson, considered one of the first progressive rock bands. Their second album, Tarkus — and its inimitable tank-armadillo cover art — amply demonstrated the skill of the three musicians, along with the sprawl that would come to define the genre. ELP disbanded in , and Lake would briefly join another group of prog rockers, Asia, though his time in the band was limited to a year. Lake spent the rest of his life periodically reuniting with ELP and King Crimson and touring behind his own music. In January of this year, Lake was given the first-ever honorary degree awarded by the Italian Conservatorior Nicolini for his work as a composer and lyricist, a fitting send-off for someone who spent his life working to erase the divide between classical and pop music.

Adapted by Keith Emerson from Aaron Copland 's piece of the same name , it is one of their most popular and enduring pieces. Although ELP did not always initially attribute the classical source for some of their pieces only attributed in later releases of the albums , Copland was attributed as the source for both Hoedown and Fanfare.

Although their debut was in The Guildhall, Plymouth, on 23 August , it was their performance six days later, at the Isle of Wight festival that drew the most attention to the new band. The band's drawing power as a live band helped them get a record contract with US label Atlantic Records. The president of Atlantic, Ahmet Ertegun, said the reason he signed ELP is because they could sell out 20,seaters before they even had a record out. That was enough for him to think that a lot of people would go out and buy the record when it did come out.

BBC reports:. One of the founding fathers of progressive rock, the British musician is known for songs including In the Court of the Crimson King and his solo hit I Believe in Father Christmas. Born in Bournemouth, Lake was given his first guitar at the age of 12 and took lessons from a local tutor called Don Strike. He formed a close friendship with fellow student Robert Fripp, with whom he created King Crimson in …. But within a year, founding member Mike Giles quit and Lake refused to work with the band…. The singer and bassist was then approached by Emerson, who had supported King Crimson on a North American tour and needed a singer for his new band. Unusually, the band combined heavy rock riffs with a classical influence.
Following their self-titled debut the prior year, the band were eager to get another album out into the hands of the public, and this live concert recording seemed like the logical choice. BMG has lavishly reissued this classic album in a dual digipack, complete with a bonus CD containing another performance from ELP a few months prior in late in London, where they also performed the suite along with a few choice cuts from their debut, as well as a live medley of the suite performed in Puerto Rico in This new remaster of Pictures at an Exhibition sounds fantastic, giving this symphonic rock masterpiece the clarity it always deserved. Hearing the punch of "Promenade" and "The Gnome" just burst out of your speakers is a thing of beauty, and Keith Emerson especially in all his glory with his array of synths, Hammond organ, and piano. Keith struts his legendary skills on the Hammond throughout "Blues Variation" alongside some acrobatic bass lines from Lake, while the three-part "Baba Yaga" section again displays just how ferocious this band truly was.

I recently acquired a copy of "Return Of The Manticore" box from Forum member spotlightkid after many years of searching for it. I had not heard the studio version of "Pictures" before I got the box. I am guessing most don't like it but there is a certain charm about this version I really enjoy. It's lowered in tone obviously for Lake, and I usually find that a big negative when musicians do that but it comes off rather well here.
