As we left we realized that we would exit Knapps Narrows at dead low water. Not wanting to chance running aground on the shoals off Tilghman Island, we opted for the longer route around the tip of Blackwalnut Point. We had a moderate northwesterly breeze, and by the time we cleared the point it would be low tide. We figured that with the tide coming in, a favorable current would push us northward, and it would be a one-tack beat to Annapolis. We assumed the current would soon go slack and then start to push us on our way north. An hour later we were still up against more than half a knot of current.

This page contains Chesapeake Bay weather and tides information, including NWS Chesapeake Bay marine forecasts and links to real-time meteorological and tides information from data buoys located throughout the Chesapeake Bay. The weather is important. Never go out on the bay without checking the weather forecast. Storms can roll through the Chesapeake quickly and thunderstorms can be fierce. Provides a text forecast, storm warning map, radar and satellite images, and current hourly weather observations.

NOAA Historical Tidal Current Data for the Coastal United States
Hourly water current speed and direction are overlayed in a map based depiction. Click below for links to common locations. If a location is not listed pan the map to the desired location to see if water current information is available or view the full location listing. FishCurrents provides the current speed and direction to help determine the optimal times for fishing as different species of fish prefer specific water conditions. This site is provided for informational purposes only and is not intended for navigation.
Knowledge of the timing and strength of tidal currents is extremely important for safe navigation in coastal waters. Tidal currents are almost always the strongest current experienced by vessels operating offshore and for considerable distances inside bays and river estuaries. Standardized procedures exist for analyzing tidal current data to separate the tidal and nontidal parameters. Daily predictions are made based on information obtained from current reference stations in short-term current studies. Additional predictions are made for locations referenced to these tidal current reference stations.
Scroll and zoom the map to a region of interest and then start the animation by pressing the play button at the bottom left of the screen. You can also just drag the time slider back and forth. Select a tide or current station by clicking or tapping on a station. It will enlarge when selected and the daily graph for that station will be displayed. When green, the current is flooding flowing toward the mainland , and when yellow, the current is ebbing flowing away from the mainland.
