Reviewed by Asaf Romirowsky. Middle East Quarterly Spring Edward Said called Palestinians "the victims of the victims," and such Holocaust inversion has been baked into the Palestinian story, turning Jews and Israelis into Nazis. This strategy of feigned victimhood and weakness underlies the success story of the Palestinian narrative. Yemini, former opinion editor at the Israeli daily Maariv and now a columnist for Yediot Ahronot , unpacks the relationship between Israel and its global image. The Industry of Lies argues that the global Israel-boycott movement has emboldened a growing disconnect between facts and perceptions.
Until the s, the conflict was, indeed, called the Israeli-Arab conflict. And what about the term, industry? And those involved in this industry gleefully sell their product to a naive consumer who gobbles up the collection of lies as if it was a gourmet meal and not what it really is: rancid falafel deep fried in old oil and served in stale pita. Ben-Dror could no longer bear standing by as this odious industry weaves its evil in the world. He loves Israel and believes in Israel too much to let it go on unchallenged:. As time went on, it became clear that I was wrong [in not opposing the lies].

Industry of Lies: Media, Academia, and the Israeli-Arab Conflict
It is liberal-minded academics, intellectuals, and human rights activists. So writes Ben-Dror Yemini, an Israeli journalist and former opinion page editor of Maariv , who thoroughly debunks these defamations in Industry of Lies. Yemini is at his best when he stands long-held assumptions on their head. Thus Israel has often been accused of forcibly evicting the Arabs from Palestine in in what the Arabs term the Naqba or "catastrophe. He describes the Jewish Naqba —a forcible eviction that actually happened—in which some , Jews were driven from Arab lands and their property stolen. Similarly, while debunking accusations that Israel practices apartheid, Yemini talks about Arab apartheid, which Arabs practice against their Palestinian brethren.

When almost half of all Europeans believe that Israel treats the Palestinians just like the Nazis treated the Jews, when leading politicians assert that the Arab-Israeli conflict is the central cause of violence in the world, and when prominent intellectuals argue that Israel is an apartheid state, the unfortunate reality is that the lies are winning. As a result, Israel has become the devil incarnate in the eyes of many otherwise good and reasonable people — people who genuinely want to see peace but inadvertently contribute to the continuation of the Israeli-Arab conflict. The tragedy is that they are neither helping the Palestinians nor promoting agreement or reconciliation. Instead, they lend legitimacy to the fallacious claims of the most extreme activists, empowering not moderates but the worst of the radicals who have no interest in attaining peace. Israel is not free from flaws.
