Landscape architecture firm Reed Hilderbrand has cut a pathway through water as part of its extension to the sculpture garden at the New Orleans Museum of Modern Art. Measuring six acres 2. American practice Reed Hilderbrand created the foot-long metre-long pathway to run underneath an existing bridge that crossed the existing site and the site of the new addition. It is billed as the first canal-link of its kind in the US. The lagoon water rises up to the top of the walkway's balustrade, a detail NOMA director Susan Taylor likens to the larger levee systems in the city that hold back the Mississippi River. Water forms a key feature of the sculpture garden's extension, which wraps a lagoon reshaped and cleared of the mud that had accumulated in the lagoon over the years.

Monumental art and walks on water: New Orleans Museum of Art opens expanded sculpture garden
The sculpture garden includes sites for 27 new works of art, as well as an outdoor amphitheatre and stage, pedestrian bridges and walkways, a new gallery, and an outdoor learning environment. With environmental impact a top priority for the project team, the sculpture garden expansion emphasizes the distinctive character of the Louisiana landscape.
The expansion, which was privately funded and took 18 months to complete, is a way for NOMA to entice residents to actively participate in both its programs and the greater art world. We like to think of it as our gift to the city. Elyn Zimmerman, "Mississippi Meanders," Photo Credit: R. Photo Credit: Richard Sexton. Pedestrian Pathway. Right: Tony Cragg, "Runner,"

They have I had visited this amazing sculpture garden the last time I was in New Orleans and loved it. Returning this time it is now expanded and even better - don't miss! After the aquarium and lunch went to sculpture garden. We like art and with the trees it's nice and shady although still hot.
Atypical of most sculpture gardens, this garden is located within a mature existing landscape of pines, magnolias and live oaks surrounding two lagoons. -
