Time Required. The steps in this guide should be split up and made into a series of prerequisite guides. This guide takes a little more work than some of the other lawn mower replacements. You first remove the air filter, and then go behind it to remove and clean the carburetor tank. Before you get started, you may want to purchase an O-ring if your lawn mower is old, as the O-ring in the carburetor tank may be worn.

In this Briggs and Stratton FAQ, we breakdown how to check, fix and install the fuel pump on your lawn mower or snow blower. A fuel pump is used when the gas tank is mounted lower than the carburetor and cannot rely on gravity to carry gas through the fuel line. A fitting on the crankcase cover or the dipstick tube draws the pressure to pump fuel. The fuel pump is typically mounted on the carburetor, near the fuel tank or between the tank and carburetor. Reference diagram below. Different pumps will include some variants in the part configuration, but these basic instructions can guide you through installing the replacement fuel pump. Picture below is round fuel pump, one of the most common variants.

Run engine until it stops from lack of fuel. Wait until engine cools before performing any maintenance. Using standard pliers, squeeze tabs on hose clamps and slide them away from hose ends. Remove hose from fittings. Beware of residual fuel in hose.

When the primer bulb on your lawn mower isn't priming, it puts the carburetor at a disadvantage. Designed to replace air in the fuel lines and carburetor with gasoline when you depress the button several times, a primer bulb provides a crucial service that makes starting the engine easier. Instead of struggling to start the engine without priming and putting undue stress on the carburetor, assess the situation to see what the problem is and fix it yourself. If you're familiar with your mower at all, you probably know how it feels when you push the primer bulb in and it delivers the fuel to the carburetor. There's a slight resistance when you push it, and you can feel that it's pulling fuel from the gas tank. When it's not working, however, the bulb may refuse to pop back out after you depress it.
