Jump to navigation. Boasting a bigger head that really instils confidence behind the ball. The first thing to note is the outrageous feel and sound emitted — there is no better fairway wood on the market in these regards. The XR 16 fairway wood also marries length and distance expertly, and is one of the longest and most forgiving clubs out there. Furthermore, the brand added a cambered sole, meaning it works well from the deck, and the light rough. It gets through the turf with ease. It also has a relatively penetrating ball flight.

The Callaway XR 16 fairway woods were designed with middle and higher handicap players in mind, and they will see the biggest gains with the switch to this club. The innovative features Callaway introduced with this line of woods primarily focus on improving the height and distance of mis-hit shots, which will benefit the lesser player more than the better player. But any middle or upper handicapper looking for more forgiveness and ball speed should look no further than this XR 16 fairway wood. To tackle this, the company slightly increased the head shape of the club which helped lower the center of gravity and increase COR. The crowns of these fairway woods are also lighter than previous fairway woods, which allowed Callaway to shift the excess weight around the clubhead to maximize forgiveness and increase the amount of ball speed the club could generate.

Fairway woods are a must have in your golf club set if you want to improve your scores on the course and this is regardless of your handicap. Finding the best is even more critical, but you can trust the XR 16 from Callaway to perform well for you.

Can you remember the first time you ever saw a metal fairway wood? Well NOW you are going to see big. Probably double the size of the original metal fairway woods and that is just what Callaway wants. Something that is going to help a wider spectrum of players in a number of departments. One is the ball striking factor, but there are a few others. If you need help in the ball striking and forgiveness departments - look no further! The XR 16 has a larger than standard head with aerodynamic design that improves clubhead speed and ball speed.

Callaway XR 16 Fairway Review

Now that you can't rely on a Volkswagen anymore I have been looking around for an alternative metal based source of emotional comfort and one of the contenders is Callaway fairway woods. By and large they are historically very good and with the introduction of the Face Cup to recent designs they are back to their very best and the XR 16 fairway combines this with what was once a Callaway strength of a contoured sole. The Warbird sole on the original Big Bertha fairways was the daddy of all fairway soles over 20 years ago. With the exception of the short lived V-Series woods that brought back a toned down Warbird, Callaway's promotion of recent fairway soles as a 'modern Warbird' were pushing it a little. Callaway has not alluded to this, it's just my feeling, but the larger contour on the sole from heel to toe combines with another one from front to back to make the XR 16 feel more like the true heir to Warbird, even if it does not look the same. It provides all the same benefits of creating a beautiful lie angle and address position together with playability from all types of lie and slopes. The lower central point on the sole also reduces the contact points in longer grass and therefore makes it more playable from the semi-rough too.

We really liked the laser pattern that Callaway use to highlight the centre of the face, it focuses attention brilliantly behind the ball. The head sits really square at address and we reckon the size delivers a great blend of versatility from different situations and good playability thanks to its stability.
