All rights reserved. Great whites are torpedo-shaped with powerful tails that can propel them through the water at up to 15 miles per hour. The legendary great white shark is far more fearsome in our imaginations than in reality. As scientific research on these elusive predators increases, their image as mindless killing machines is beginning to fade. Of the plus annual shark attacks worldwide, fully one-third to one-half are attributable to great whites. However, most of these are not fatal, and new research finds that great whites, who are naturally curious, are "sample biting" then releasing their victims rather than preying on humans.

They come after research published this week that collated hundreds of examples of entanglement, which the authors say is a growing and under-reported problem. The paper, published this week the Endagered Species Research journal, was the first to use social media to crowd source such reports. In total, it recorded 1, reported cases, but its authors say the true number is likely to be much higher. It found that discarded or lost fishing nets accounted for the overwhelmingly majority - 74 per cent - of incidents, with plastic loops causing 11 per cent. In one video clip, a great white can be seen with a rope around its middle near the island of Guadalupe in Mexico. Another image shows an adult shortfin mako shark entangled in a fishing rope that is itself covered in barnacles, causing curvature in the shark's spine. This week's report says: "Entanglement can lead to starvation, suffocation, immobilisation and ultimately death, making this unequivocally an animal welfare issue.

The great white shark Carcharodon carcharias , also known as the great white , white shark or white pointer , is a species of large mackerel shark which can be found in the coastal surface waters of all the major oceans. The great white shark is notable for its size, with larger female individuals growing to 6. The great white shark has no known natural predators other than, on very rare occasions, the killer whale. It is also known to prey upon a variety of other marine animals, including fish and seabirds. It is the only known surviving species of its genus Carcharodon , and is responsible for more recorded human bite incidents than any other shark.

Perhaps the last thing you want to see while in the ocean is a great white shark. For divers in Hawaii, it may have been an incredible discovery. A group of divers near Oahu were monitoring tiger sharks feeding off a decomposed sperm whale when they encountered a giant great white shark Tuesday, reports The Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Ocean Ramsey, one of the divers who studies sharks, told The Star-Advertiser that, based on the shark's size and markings, the shark may be Deep Blue, one of the largest great whites on record. According to Jeffries, marine experts familiar with the shark reviewed her photos and confirmed it was Deep Blue. Jeffries said pictures were taken of the shark and consulted against a database to confirm Deep Blue's identity. Jeffries said the shark was confirmed as Deep Blue by the Marine Conservation Science Institute, a nonprofit group focused on conserving marine resources, and shark photographer George Probst, who runs the website Sharkpix.
