Sometimes billed as " The Witch", the episode was directed by Stephen Cragg and was the first episode not written by show creator Joss Whedon and the first of seven with no vampire in it. The premise of Buffy the Vampire Slayer involves an adolescent girl named Buffy Summers who is chosen by mystical forces and endowed with superhuman powers in order to defeat vampires, demons, and other evils in the fictional town of Sunnydale. She accomplishes this with the assistance of a close circle of friends and family. In "Witch", Buffy attempts to maintain a level of normalcy in her life by auditioning for her school's cheerleading squad. However, Buffy and her friends must stop a fellow student from tampering with witchcraft in order to take competitors out of the running.

Buffy herself soon becomes the target of a deadly spell as they discover the witch's true identity. Meanwhile, Xander finally musters up the nerve to ask Buffy out on a date but in the throes of a witch's spell, Buffy's response isn't exactly as he'd hoped. Despite Giles ' misgivings, Buffy decides to try out for the Sunnydale High cheerleading squad in order to reclaim some of the happy, normal social life she enjoyed back in Los Angeles. Right before the trials begin, Xander gives Buffy a bracelet with "Yours Always" engraved on it. During the trial, the hands of a girl named Amber spontaneously combust. In the library, the gang discusses what happened and possibility. Xander and Willow try to force their involvement, through research and stuff.

You can check out our thoughts on the previous episode by clicking these words. We see for the first time the monster of the week structure that the show will utilize fairly regularly, especially in the first few seasons of the show, and it reminds viewers that Buffy will be dealing with other supernatural bad eggs other than just your run-of-the-mill vampire. To that end, she decides to try out for the cheerleading squad. Weirdly, Sunnydale has adopted a vintage cheerleading uniform that for some reason incorporates woolen sweaters despite being in famously sweltering Southern California. Only one problem — cheerleaders seem to have a target on their back at good old Sunnydale High. One is the victim of spontaneous hand combustion while in the middle of a routine, one has her mouth literally removed from her face, and our vicious queen Cordelia goes blind during a driving lesson gone terribly wrong. Since this is Sunnydale, obviously witches are involved.
