At just 21 years of age, Captain Charles B. This memoir was written in when recollections were still sharp. It resulted in a very detailed account of what it was like to take command of a line infantry company and lead it into battle. The book is a template for writing a personal military memoir. It is by far the finest memoir of any junior officer in World War II. Charles MacDonald does a great job of keeping his focus on his own experiences. He does not speculate or waste my time by giving conjecture on the big picture.

Very compelling reading. Macdonald is a fairly unique individual, as a serving small unit CO and noted historian. The lack of macro strategy in this account is a plus, you feel some of the confusion experienced by the men on the ground. Cannot recomend this book strongly enough. Apt portrayal of the mental and physical stress of war at the individual and unit command level.

How this green commander gains his men's loyalty in the snows of war-torn Europe is one of the great, true, unforgettable war stories of all time. The late Charles B. MacDonald also wrote A Time for Trumpets and other books. He died in It speaks to the younger generations with almost the same immediacy as it did to the generation of the Second World War.
