While there are now several Hindu temples in New York City area, this temple continues to be among the most prominent of them. The temple architecture and the rituals follow the South Indian tradition. The temple is visited not only by the Hindus but also those who wish to explore religious diversity in Queens. The temple has a vegetarian restaurant termed the Temple Canteen in the basement [2] which is popular for its simple South Indian cuisine and for the temple experience. The canteen feeds 4, people a week, with as many as 10, during the Deepavali Diwali holiday. The Hindu Temple Society of North America was incorporated on January 26, , and initially met in the living room of Alagappa Alagappan , one of the co-founders.

The temple society Sri Maha Vallabha Ganapati Devasthanam and community center have been hubs for many Hindus in this part of the world since The center has halls for weddings, an auditorium where I recently caught a Balinese dance concert and, in the basement, a canteen serving some of the best dosas in the city. Uma Mysorekar, the president of the temple, said the canteen began in when a special cook was hired to prepare the naivedyams, the food offerings to the deities, which are a part of every temple ritual. Soon enough the chef was cooking for devotees who would spend the entire day at the temple. Now, the canteen is open to anyone. Weeknight crowds are sparse, but the place is packed all day on weekends. It is amazing what the cooks can conjure up with little more than lentil-rice flour, loads of butter and a giant, searing hot griddle.

The reason we have to stay was due to having no power and heat at our house because of hurricane Sandy, it was a bad situation that turned good with the beautiful rooms and nice service we got from the hotel employees. Nice hotel, needs some paint and TLC, but reasonably priced and offers a continental breakfast, good for an overnight stay, close to all. Hotel is in center Flushing where a lot Chinese restaurants around with 0 distance, nearby subway station. The room was a little small, but clean and nice. It was a great place, close to China town and Subway. Only down side was the food.

Remarkably, this astonishing temple is not to be found in India, but amongst the suburban family homes of Flushing, Queens. Built on Bowne Street on land bought from the Russian Orthodox Church, the incredible Hindu temple was begun in , for the rapidly increasing Hindu immigrant population of New York. Built in the South Indian style, by skilled craftsmen and temple builders from India, the idol images are carved from granite imported from India as well. The temple itself is a thriving place of worship and popular community centre. Non-Hindu visitors are welcome, although photography of the silver shrines covered in colourful garlands is not allowed. Underneath the Temple is the community canteen, that serves some of the best South Indian Dosas to be found in the city. The beauty, serenity and friendliness of the Ganesh Temple, is matched by the deliciousness of the food below, making the Hindu Temple Society of North America a delight to all the senses.
