The Lotus Sutra is one of the most important sutras in Mahayana Buddhism and was likely written down between B. Already well known in India, the sutra became more famous and influential when it was translated into Chinese by Kumarajiva in the year The sutra is named the Lotus Sutra because the lotus symbolized the oneness of cause and effect, specifically the cause of aspiring to enlightenment Buddhahood and the effect of attaining it, since the lotus is a flower that blooms and seeds at the same time. It also symbolizes the purity of Buddhahood, blooming in the midst of our ordinary lives just as the lotus blossoms in muddy pond water. The Wonderful Dharma of the Lotus Sutra is that all living beings, whether they realize it or not, have the capacity to become enlightened.
The Lotus Sutra is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential sutras, or sacred scriptures, of Buddhism. In it, Shakyamuni expounds the ultimate truth of life to which he was enlightened. The Lotus Sutra is a teaching that encourages an active engagement with mundane life and all its challenges. Buddhahood is not an escape from these challenges but an inexhaustible source of positive energy to grapple with and transform the sufferings and contradictions of life and create happiness. It is the ultimate reality of life—the fundamental law that underlies the workings of all life and the universe and is expressed as all phenomena. While this Mystic Law cannot be easily explained, it is encapsulated in the sutra, and it is by devoting themselves to this sutra and sharing it with others, Shakyamuni says, that his disciples and future followers can awaken to this law in their own lives. Several different Chinese translations were made from the Sanskrit version of the sutra, among which the translation by Kumarajiva — , titled Miao-fa-lian-hua-jing Jpn.
According to Paul Williams , "For many East Asian Buddhists since early times the Lotus Sutra contains the final teaching of the Buddha, complete and sufficient for salvation. According to Fuse, the verse sections of chapters and 17 were probably created in the first century BCE, with the prose sections of these chapters added in the first century CE. He estimates the date of the third stage, chapters 10, 11, , and 27, around CE. Chapters belong to the last stage around CE. According to Stephen F. Teiser and Jacqueline Stone, there is consensus about the stages of composition but not about the dating of these strata.
Of the countless scriptures of Mahayana Buddhism , few are more widely read or revered than the Lotus Sutra. Its teachings thoroughly permeate most schools of Buddhism in China, Korea, and Japan. Yet its origins are shrouded in mystery. However, most historians believe the Sutra was written in the 1st or 2nd century CE, probably by more than one writer. A translation was made from Sanskrit to Chinese in CE, and this is the earliest historical documentation of its existence. As with so many of the Mahayana sutras, the original text of the Lotus Sutra is lost.
